Wednesday, January 11 7:00 PM, Pollin Chapel |
Friday during services, January 13 6:00 PM, Temple |
David Dennis, one of the original CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) members from New Orleans that started Direct Action sit-ins in 1960, will be the featured guest speaker at our special Sabbath service on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 6:00 P.M. He was one of the first wave of Freedom Riders that went from Montgomery to Jackson and was arrested in Mississippi. He stayed on in Mississippi with CORE and was heavily involved in all of the voter registration campaigns with Robert Moses in the state from 1961-1964. He was friends with both Michael Schwerner and James Chaney and delivered a stirring, challenging eulogy for James Chaney in Meridian, Mississippi. He went on to get his law degree. In the 80s he reconnected with Moses who had gone on to start The Algebra Project. Dennis has been working on the Algebra Project in South Carolina where he lives now, as well as Petersburg, Virginia.
Now in its fifth year, this lecture and Shabbat service honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his life and achievements and is a part of our continued collaborations between the Jewish and African American communities of Portland. Also joining the celebration on Friday evening will be CBI’s choirs and we will again welcome back the Northwest Community Gospel Chorus.
This Shabbat Program is generously underwritten by Shawn and Albert Menashe/Gevurtz Menashe Family Law Firm, Ron and Sheila Silver and the Carolyn G. and Millard S. Rosenblatt Lecture Fund.
