Deborah - Kindergarten

We had busy day today in the Kindergarten. We discussed Tu B'Shevat and that it's the birthday of the trees. The kiddos had some great ideas about how to care for trees and how important it is for us all to take care of our Earth. We learned some hebrew today as well. The words Tikkun Olam which mean repair the Earth. We discussed the different ways we can help repair our Earth and take care of our beautiful planet for generations to come. Some of the children's ideas were; to recycle, plant fruits and vegetables, plant trees especially if you cut one down, turn of the light when you leave a room, be kind to one another, help someone in need and don't pollute!

We painted trees and added blossoms made from dyed popcorn.

We had music with Sam Swire too!

Some new Hebrew words for the week:

Tikkun Olam repair the Earth

Tu B'Shevat- birthday of the trees

Boker Tov - good morning

Last week we learned about how and why Jews celebrate Tu B'Shevat.  Today we had the chance to participate in a Tu B'Shevat seder and celerate the birthday of the trees together.  We also had music and sang Tu B'Shevat songs. Thank you to all first grade parents for bringing food and drinks for the celebration.

Why is it important to have a birthday for the trees?

We will zip back into time and learn about another torah story.

We learned the Hebrew letter Chaf.  We continued our study of the Book of Exodus, focusing on the 10 plagues.  We played Jewish Jeopardy and reviewed what we have been learning about this year.

Who did we learn about who was stubborn in our Torah study?  Why was he stubborn?

I have sent home the Hebrew workbooks this week.  Please have your child complete the letter Vet pages.  Also, review previous letters and sounds.

No school next week because of President's Day.  See you the following week.  We will continue with the Book of Exodus, and in our Hebrew workbooks.

Talk to your parents about this week’s activity and discussion.

Mor - Grade 4

We practiced the Gvurot prayer, and discussed the many powers of g-d that are mentioned in it. after reading it a few times the kids worked on a

small group project where they wrote about one power we discussed (each group was assigned one) and illustrated it with a picture.

We then switched to G'milut Hasadim in the Chai book, and talked about Ohavei Shalom (Peacemakers). we read a story about Aaron who was known as a great peacemaker, and talked about some ways we can each act as a peacemaker when others are fighting.

Are you a Rodef/Ohev Shalom (Pursuer of Peace/peacemaker)? what do you do when you see others fight?

pages 19-21 in the Hineni book, and at least one page in the purple Hineni script book if it's not completed yet.

Practice reading Gvurot

we will focus on vocabulary words from the prayers

We are working hard on the blessings recited after the reading of the Haftarah. Today we focused on the third part and reviewed the previous two parts. We had a vocabulary quiz. With the exception of a few students, it appears that more consistent review is needed.

We have studied the Jewish calendar, the Hebrew months and seasons. The students worked in groups, each one created a poster for a different season. They wrote the seasons and the months in Hebrew and illustrated them. Their beautiful work is on display in our classroom.

There is no class on 2/19. I hope that the students will take the opportunity to review the vocabulary we have covered thus far and improve their writing in Hebrew.

Our next class is 2/26.

We continued our discussion about what it means to pursue justice. Students created ethical compasses to visually represent the areas of our lives where we are called upon to be righteous and active in our pursuit of justice. We then learned about Maimonides' Ladder of Tzedakah, and how to use it as a foundation for making a decision on tzedakah allocation.

How are Maimonides' laws of tzedakah helpful in deciding to contribute tzedakah?

Due Thursday, February 16:

Complete pages 40 - 41 in the CHAI workbook: "Maimonides' Ladder of Tzedakah.

Please be sure that your student completes the homework assignment and brings his/her CHAI workbook to class each Thursday.

Students will learn how to sanctify acts of tzedakah with a blessing. And we will hopefully do some research in the computer lab on tzedakah projects that young students can do or have done.
