The Women You Won’t Meet in Hebrew School

The Women You Won’t Meet in Hebrew School

Sivan Rotholz, rabbinical student and Congregation Beth Israel Torah study instructor, led a six-part course (archived below)  this spring in which we  encountered and re-encountered Torah’s greatest stories through a gynocentric lens (Gynocentric, as opposed to androcentric, means centered on the experiences of women).

In this series, we met queens and concubines, helpmates and harlots, victims and vigilantes. Each meeting, archived below, paired  the story of an unforgettable biblical woman with midrash — ancient and modern, poetry and visual art — that sheds new light upon her. Together, we reflected  on what these incredible women have to teach us today, and added our voices to the age-old tradition of wrestling with sacred texts.
