Author Miriam Flock discusses her novel, Wild Grapes, in which Bluma Rappaport’s joins her husband, Sender, on a derelict farm in Geneva, Ohio, in the early years of the twentieth century. An adherent of the Jewish back-to-the-land movement, Sender is eager to be a free farmer on his own soil, but he’s also more interested in studying the Bible than he is in the actual work of farming. Bluma must navigate the challenges of a resurgent and highly anti-Semitic Ku Klux Klan, the Spanish flu, the Great Depression, and a husband who loves his land more than he does his wife, while simultaneously trying to launch her daughters into a better life.
A potluck brunch will follow; please RSVP and let us know what (pork- and shellfish-free) dish you plan to bring!
