High Holidays 5787

Reconnect. Renew. Repair. Rejoice.

The High Holidays invite us into a season of connection and renewal.

We connect to our community, to our traditions, and to those we love, those we miss, and those we are still becoming.

We renew our spirt, our purpose, and our work toward a more just and compassionate world.

From Selichot, our entrance into this season, through Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and into the autumnal joys of Sukkot, we welcome you to join us for worship, study, song, and reflection.

As the Days of Awe, approach, this page will be your best resource for details on how to join us for observance, study, and celebration, and you may find our full schedule of services and programs by clicking here.

Our doors are open.

Welcome, Guests

We’re so glad you’re considering joining us for the High Holidays. We ask all guests to register in advance, and when you arrive, to please stop by our welcome table to check in. As with our members, there’s no need for paper tickets—just bring yourself and your spirit for the season.

For the High Holidays, it is customary for guests to make a donation in appreciation of their host congregation. A contribution of $180 is suggested, but we warmly welcome whatever is meaningful and appropriate for you.

Before You Arrive

No tickets needed

At CBI, we do not issue paper tickets. We invite members and registered guests to attend whichever services speak to them.

  • If you are a guest of the congregation, please stop by the clearly-marked welcome table in our Main Sanctuary to check in upon your arrival.

Bag policy

To help keep our community safe and comfortable, large backpacks, bags, purses, and packages are not allowed during services. Please leave them at home when possible.

  • Any purses, bags, and other personal items must cleared by security at our clearly-marked inspection point outside the Main Sanctuary, and our security personnel may require you to leave items at bag check rather than bring them into services.

Parking

Parking in our neighborhood is notoriously difficult. Please allow extra time, and consider carpooling, rideshare services, or public transportation.

Traffic

Beginning on September 11 and continuing beyond the High Holidays season all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 through Portland’s Rose Quarter will be closed. The impact on traffic patterns and congestion across the metropolitan area will be considerable, so please research alternate routes and allow for extra time in transit.

Accessibility

We are committed to ensuring everyone can participate fully. If there is anything we can do to support your experience, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Questions? Please be in touch

Book of Remembrance

On Yom Kippur, we recite Yizkor (Memorial) Prayers, honoring the sacred memory of our departed loved ones. As part of this observance, Congregation Beth Israel distributes our Book of Remembrance, which includes prayers, reflections from our clergy, and a page honoring CBI members lost since last Yom Kippur. We also invite all who wish to include an entry for loved ones they wish to remember.

The deadline for inclusion in CBI’s 5787 Book of Remembrance is Monday, August 24; we must have your entry by that date if you wish your loved ones to be included. We know this deadline is significantly earlier than in previous years; this is due to both out our printer’s schedule and the dates of the High Holidays themselves.

The book itself will be distributed at our Yom Kippur Yizkor Service, and a version will be available online for those who wish it.

URJ Reciprocal Seating

We are happy to help CBI members who will be away from the Portland area arrange reciprocal seating (where available) at other URJ congregations—though we will miss starting the new year with you.

If you would like assistance with this, please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), and let us know which for holiday(s) you will be away, and the name of your desired host synagogue.

If you are a member of another URJ congregation and wish to join CBI for the High Holidays, we look forward to welcoming you; please contact your temple administration, and have them connect with us on your behalf.

The Robert Peltz (z"l) High Holidays Funds for Food Drive

As we approach the High Holidays, we invite you to participate in our annual Robert Peltz (z”l) High Holidays Funds for Food Drive.

Food insecurity continues to affect our neighbors across our community, and the need for compassionate, responsive support remains urgent. Through this annual drive, CBI partners with local organizations working every day to provide nourishment, dignity, and hope.

Last year, thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised more than $70,000 (far exceeding our $40,000 goal) and distributed support to organizations including Lift UP PDX, Rose Haven, Urban Gleaners, Sunshine Division, and many others.

This year, we invite you to help us continue this work. Every contribution strengthens our ability to live our commitment to Tikkun Olam and care for the community around us.
