Our Committees

Adult Education – Collaborates with clergy for an annual educational theme and develops a full year of adult education programming around the theme for our congregation and community.

Budget and Finance – Chaired by the Treasurer, the Budget Committee develops and oversees the annual CBI operational budgets as well as recommends 5 & 10 year budgets, for long range planning.

Buildings and Grounds – Oversees the management of all aspects of CBI’s historic campus; the buildings, grounds, and facility maintenance. Studies and recommends upcoming restoration and campus projects as needed. Works with Social Action Committee on sustainability issues.

  • Art & Interior – Subcommittee of Building & Grounds that works closely with Building & Grounds on interior and exterior design projects. Reviews and accepts/declines all donated art and Judaica for the CBI collection. Also reviews and approves the artwork, furnishings and Judaica for the CBI campus.
  • Kitchen – Ad-Hoc Committee within Building & Grounds that oversees the Catering Panel and makes recommendations as needed. Reviews catering and kitchen use policy.
  • Security – Subcommittee of Building and Grounds that oversees security related capital projects, security budget and security programming and processes.

Cemetery – Oversees the maintenance (short term and long term) and operations of the Beth Israel Cemetery and Mausoleums as well as Cemetery Budget and other cemetery issues. Creates or revises cemetery policies as needed for Board approval.


  • Every Family Initiative – Coordinates and implements the marketing and fundraising for CBI.
  • Annual Fundraiser – Subcommittee of Development that creates and organizes annual fundraiser.
  • Planned Giving – Subcommittee of Development that creates Planned Giving Campaign.

Education & Youth – Focuses on programs and activities that meet the educational needs of CBI with an emphasis on policy and curriculum. Develops strategic plan for expanding the preschool and religious school. Reviews current education policies. Oversees education department budgets.

Investment – Chaired by the CBI Treasurer, oversees CBI’s investments, currently managed by the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation. (can you please create a hyperlink for OJCF)

Membership – Welcomes our newest members, helps encourage affiliation for the unaffiliated, and creates engaging membership programming for all. Oversees Chavurot Program.

Nominating/Leadership Development – Cultivates leadership within the congregation and recommends eligible congregants for leadership and board positions. Committee members appointed by the Board of Trustees.

Social Action – Promotes social action through programming and volunteer opportunities, with a focus on education, advocacy, direct service and interfaith coalition building. Recommends lecturer for annual Daniel J. and Elizabeth O. Cohn Lecture. Reviews Religious Action Center initiatives and works with Rabbi Cahana to set priorities for CBI’s call to action. Learn more about the Social Action committee.

Technology – Oversees computer systems, maintenance and software upgrades as needed. Oversees paid computer consultants.

Ushering – Trains and provides ushers for all religious services and CBI programming.
