Partners and Volunteer Opportunities

The SAC is an open committee that encourages congregation members to participate in planning, implementing, and staffing many programs that work towards tikkun olam in our world. Below are some of the activities we have right now that are ongoing and can use more volunteers.

  • Join the SAC Advocacy Task Force (Ongoing committee)
  • Donate to our Social Action Fund and Social Action Food Fund (Ongoing)

Activities at NW Towers:

  • Tutor children from NW Towers Annex (Tuesday afternoons during the school year)
  • Meals and parties for NW Tower residents (Occasional events throughout the year)
  • Volunteer support for weekly Sunday Food Pantry

Support Lift Urban Portland:

Congregation Beth Israel was one of the founders of Lift UP and has continued its support since the beginning, nearly 40 years ago. Lift UP works to reduce hunger and improve the lives of low-income residents of Northwest and Downtown Portland. These are the invisible poor who are housed but lack sufficient resources for many basic necessities. Lift UP collects and distributes food and sponsors educational and community building programs that encourage healthy life choices and promote socialization.

Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals and teams. Current needs include:

  • Free Food Market, held the second Wednesday of every month in the social hall of First Immanuel Lutheran Church (NW 18th & Irving) – from 6:30 to 10:00 a.m. set out produce and grocery items and assist clients with their selections.
  • On-Call – fill-in when regular volunteers cancel their shifts due to illness or emergency. Available volunteers cover wherever needed: delivering food boxes, picking up food from gleaning partners, packing food boxes/produce at the warehouse, etc. (Agreeing to be on the on-call roster does not mean that you have to agree to do the shift if called.)

Please contact Abby Mulvihill if you are interested.
